Photography is the mastery of a science with an eye for artistic impression. It is not necessary a science nor is it an art. Instead, it is a process, one which involves story telling. Why do we all take photos? We mortals love to share stories. For some (minority), perhaps they want to create art. Although art is only art after the public acknowledge it as one (either during … more
While our leaders in both political parties have been bickering over a national energy policy for the past 30 years we Americans have been squandering energy at an alarming rate. Bigger cars, bigger houses and more gadgets are the recipe for disaster. This is our fault and not just the politicians. Despite what we Americans may say we don't seem to give a damn about future generations. Energy conservation … more
I'm a huge fan of reusable shopping bags and feel so naked when I go grocery shopping without them. Some have voiced concerns about them getting germy over time, so my suggestion is to skip over those 99 cent plastic bags (they break really easily anyways) and pay the $5 for a sturdy cloth ones which can be tossed into a washing machine. Mine have lasted me for years. Note: mine … more
Last year, I was given an honor assignment of documenting the development and growth of a small community garden at Wicker Park Grace, a small Christian spiritual community in Chicago. I was happy to be a part of the project, which was a runaway success. Shooting the videos was tricky because I had a group of people who were either averse to appearing on camera or didn't have the time to do so even … more
I realize it's a way to save on the plastic we use for bags, which is a plus. But these suckers wear out, and when they do, they are neither recyclable or biodegradeable.

Another one of those great corporate tricks used on naive suburbanites to make them believe they're living healthier. Really, in this country we have access to the very best, cleanest tap water on the planet, and we've managed to trick ourselves into thinking we're doing ourselves good by paying three bucks a bottle. This isn't a healthy choice; it's a middle-class status symbol which, FYI, is produced … more

BaronSamedi3 posted a Quick Tip about Recycling.
May 17, 2011
The concept of reusing materials is fantastic. But I do frequently wonder what kinds of materials, chemicals, and energies are used in the actual recycling process. How much consumable energy is used in recycling, and what kinds of cleaning chemicals are used? I find it immensely disturbing that the environmental experts I asked these questions to were stopped dead in their tracks and didn't have … more
Earth Day and Conservatism April 22, 1970 was the first designated Earth Day and was also the 100th anniversary of Vladimir Lenin, the Russian Marxist Revolutionary and Creator of the Soviet Communist Party. Coincidence? Some think not, which along with being sponsored by many "liberal organizations" across the globe as well as liberals across our country, created a polarization … more

Every month Americans throw out enough glass bottles and jars to fill up a giant skyscraper (think: Empire State Building), but all of these jars are recyclable! Glass jars will last over 500 years in the landfill! More than 20 million Hershey's Kisses are wrapped each day, using 133 square miles of aluminum foil. Believe it not, ALL that foil is recyclable, but not many people … more
Why is it a mere +2 rating? Well, no, it's not because I don't appreciate the Earth or going green, but rather, the idea that we have to have an Earth Day to remind us that Earth exists! It's like Mother's Day, Father's Day, Birthday, Labor Day, Secretarial Day, etc, etc... Every day should be an Earth Day, a Father's Day, a Birthday... not a designated … more
The film follows two cavers (ladies, might I add) who went around caving in Southwest and then Greenland into the ice-caves, some 500 ft below. Lead by a French specialist (Luke), the trio descended into ice caves some 200 ft in Greenland. There’s certainly nothing like this out there in the world that any of us would ever get to see in person, except on films as such, made for the IMAX in March … more

I am a grandmother who owns 2 websites. My first website was born because I am the grandmother of 2 preemies. The first was a little girl who was born at just 26 weeks and weighted just 1 lb 15 oz. As my inspiration, AvaBaby's was born. Preemies are very fragile, they have so much to contend with, let alone any harmful chemicals. So I look for organic products whenever I can to offer to our families. … more
I love all perennials...in my garden, I have some hydrangea mophead and nikko blue; one from home depot or big box are NOT organic and always die. support your local organic nursery. I plant a lot of milkweed to save butterflies as well as a lot of butterfly bush for hummingbirds and bees and, in my area, lupine, for a local butterfly whose historic habitat in pine barrens type ecosystem is threatened … more

Got leftover wine? Yeah, I know, it's a rarity here, too... but when you do, pour it into your compost bin, pile, or other receptacle... it works as a compost starter.

EcoMama posted a Quick Tip about Precycling.
February 21, 2011
Precycling is really just about buying less junk you don't actually need. Ever since I left my full time job to stay home with the baby (and work from home part-time) we have been a lot more selective about what we buy, many things people consider 'necessities' we do just fine without. Healthy food is our biggest necessity.

EcoMama posted a Quick Tip about Freecycling.
February 21, 2011
My daughter is dressed mostly in 'freecycled' clothing from relatives, there is so much to go around I can't even imagine throwing it away, what a huge waste. Craigslist is great for this purpose, I've given away a lot of things we don't need there - stuff you couldn't really sell.
Thinking about your Spring garden yet? I am... and one practice I plan to experiment with this year is companion planting. That is, I'll be thinking about how some plants benefit the growth/survival of others, and placing them accordingly. The most user-friendly resource I've found so far is a chart on Wikipedia (which looks to be well-sourced); our writer ziggy has also written about companion … more
